That the Parliament recognises the lifetime of peace activism achieved by Atsuko Betchaku, who has recently passed away; sincerely passes on its condolences to Misao Betchaku and Yuji Betchaku, her mother and brother; highlights Atsuko’s work in supporting tsunami victims, including her fundraising after the 2012 Fukushima disaster through the founding of the Day After the Tsunami Committee and her involvement in Save the Children, Japan; commends her work in the creative arts, which focused on the impact of nuclear weapons, and notes that this included Atsuko initiating the Edinburgh Peace and Justice Centre’s 140,000 Origami Cranes Project, founding the Japanese Singing Group and her performances of poems at the Just Festival in Edinburgh.
